Another first round, another defeat for Heather Watson as she bowed out of the Korea Open last week against Elizaveta Kulichkova, and again on Monday against Jelena Jankovic. She has five first round defeats in her last six tournaments.
Since coming within two points of defeating Serena Williams on the grass of Wimbledon, the Guernsey-born Brit has failed to build any momentum, taking just three wins in Toronto back in August.
More worringly for Watson will be that lady-luck does seem to have been shining on her. In all five tournaments Watson has drawn players of a lower ranking and...

7 Things We Learnt From the First Week of Wimbledon
As we take a well-earned breather after an eventful opening week of Wimbledon there is just enough time to reflect on the goings-on at SW19.
Men's tennis has it's entertainers.
With big servers prominent at the top of the game, it was great to see the showmen take centre stage in the opening week. There was constant one-upmanship between Nick Kyrgios, Gael Monfils and Dustin Brown as the three sought to produce shots of increasingly unique flair and originality.
Whilst only Kyrgios remains in the draw, both Monfils and Brown created first week fireworks before their departure. Brown made himself a household name with a sensational four set victory over Rafael Nadal as well as claiming the unofficial title of best locks in tennis. Similarly Gael Monfils' athletic shot selection reduced his opponent and friend Gilles Simon to laughter with a ridiculous forehand [below] in their third round encounter.
There are Brits other than Murray.
Okay, so as is usual, Andy Murray is the only Brit to make it to the second week in the singles draw. But for the first time in recent memory there were signs that he may not be alone for much longer. Both Heather Watson and James Ward came within a matter of points of making it through to the fourth round, the former almost defeating world number one Serena Williams after a hugely valiant effort. Local lad, Ward, also came close in the third round, eventually falling to Canadian Vasek Pospisil in five sets.
They were not the only success stories though, as Liam Broady kick-started the week with an epic five set victory over Marinko Matosevic before recently converted Brit, Aliaz Bedene, followed suit into the second round where both their journey's ended. It was the most successful Wimbledon in years for British wildcards and gives hope that it is not long until Murray has a friend in the top 30.
Wimbledon's All-White Policy has gone mad.
There is tradition, and then there is madness. One of the more controversial talking points from the opening week is the extreme nature of the All England Club's all-white dress code. Both Eugenie Bouchard and Nick Kyrgios found themselves with rapped knuckles after falling foul of the extensive rules.
Bouchard found herself in trouble after a black bra strap emerged during her first round defeat whilst, more bizarrely, Kyrgios was told to turn the official Wimbledon headband, inside out for violating colour rules. So just to emphasise, Kyrgios was not allowed to wear the official Wimbledon headband during an official Wimbledon match. Brilliant.
Anyone is beatable in the WTA... Except Serena.
The first week saw the disappearance of a number of the biggest names in women's tennis as the grass claimed its early victims. One of the biggest shocks was Simona Halep's first round loss to Jana Cepelova. This year's form player, Carla Suarez Navarro swiftly followed whilst she was joined by Ana Ivanovic and Ekaterina Makarova who both exited in round two.
The third round saw the most notable upset as defending champion Petra Kvitova, so comfortable in her opening two rounds, left the court in tears after a tough three-set defeat to Jelena Jankovic.
Serena though. Well, she keeps just being Serena. Not only did she have to battle an inspired Heather Watson but she had to battle a packed-out Centre Court crowd in her gritty third round victory over the British number one. Can anyone actually stop her collecting her third grand slam of the year? I don't think so.
Nick Kyrgios is the Real Deal.
Since exploding onto the tennis scene in last year's Wimbledon through his defeat of Rafa, few have questioned the talents of the tenacious Aussie. One of the pitfalls though, of having a grand slam run as a teenager, is backing it up and injuries during the year have seen question marks as to whether he can last at the top level.
Not only is Kyrgios backing it up, but he is bringing character and interest to a sport with too many robotic personalities. His on-court personal rows and inventive style have made him a fan favourite, but more importantly, a real danger to the big guns in this draw. He has already dismantled big serving Milos Raonic and Richard Gasquet is next in his line of fire. John Newcombe may be right about not writing Kyrgios off too early.
Bouchard isn't having a blip, she's having a crisis.
In contrast to Kyrgios' success, Eugenie Bouchard has had a year to completely forget exacerbated by her terrible first round loss to unknown 117th ranked Duan Ying-Ying. Bouchard has been desperately seeking a tournament to turn around a turgid year but the grass of SW19, where she reached the final last year, has not been it.
Bouchard has now lost 12 of her past 14 matches and seems to be suffering from what is commonly referred to in football as a case of second-season-syndrome after her outstanding breakthrough year in 2014. The Canadian looks a shadow of the player she was 12 months ago and some serious self-evaluation needs to occur before the return to the hard court.
If it ain't broke, don't fix it!
Why, oh why did the BBC opt to revamp their highlights coverage into the terrible 'Wimbledon 2day'? When I came in from work on Monday I wanted to sit down and enjoy the highlights of the day. Instead I was treated to amateurish conversation between the out-of-her-depth Clare Balding and an awkward member of an awkward crowd among a couple of legends and a smattering of actual tennis.
The BBC have done their best to evolve the show as the week has gone on but the lack of actual tennis on show is the particular disappointment for what was formerly an excellent highlights show. I believe Balding is an excellent presenter but I am not sure she is the right person for this job and wonder whether, much like Leyton Hewitt, she won't be back at Wimbledon next year.

Watson on Road to Recovery
The British number three will compete in this weeks Cagnes-Sur-Mer 100k Tournament held in France as she seeks to get some competitive action under her belt before qualification for this month's French Open. In France she will be joined by British number two Johanna Konta.
Watson will be seeking to win her second title of the year after a marvelous victory in the Dow Corning Classic in Midland. She also won the doubles title in Midland to cap off a successful week.
The Guernsey-born star's last competitive fixture was a first round loss to Virginie Razzano 6-4 6-0 at the Sony Open in Miami. Despite the last two months on the sidelines she still sits well inside the top 100 in the Road to Singapore rankings.
With the Wimbledon rankings deadline fast approaching, she will be hoping for a successful week in order to get inside the top 110 and guarantee a spot in the main draw after a lengthy lay-off last year with glandular fever meant she tumbled out of the top 100 and currently sits 122nd.

Watson Advances To Face Radwanska
Heather Watson continued her fine form in 2014 with another victory over 16-year-old tennis prodigy Belinda Bencic.Bencic, already in the top 150 players in the world despite her age, was ultimately no match for a resurgent Heather Watson, who ground out a 7-5 6-4 victory to progress to the second round of the BNP Paribas Open as Indian Wells.
Her victory sets up a second round clash with Agnieszka Radwanska who has convincingly beaten her on two previous occasions. However Watson was sure her improving form and tactical awareness would make this match more competitive, telling the BBC, "I'm not going to give away my tactics, but i'm not going to go in playing the same way I did the other two times."
Watson came through two round of qualifying to reach the main draw at Indian Wells defeating 86th seed Virginie Razzano and 103rd seed Teliana Pereira in comfortable straight sets to prove her current ranking of 134th does not justify her quality.
Elsewhere it was disappointment for James Ward who fell in the final round of qualifying to the veteran Paul-Henri Mathieu 6-2 6-3, failing to capitalise on a number of chances to break the Frenchman.
With Daniel Cox and Johanna Konta also failing to make it through qualifying, this leaves just Heather Watson and Andy Murray left in the main draw, both competing in the second round later this week.
Murray will play either Lukas Rosol or qualifier Dusan Lajovic courtesy of a bye into the second round, as he seeks to win his first title of 2014 after a slow start to the year.
Despite having only two Brits in the singles, representation in the doubles is more impressive, with no less than four pairs including British players in the Mens draw. Andy Murray will play alongside Wimbledon 2012 Men's Double champion Jonathan Marray as they take on Juan Monaco and Gael Monfils in the opening round.
Elsewhere Dominic Inglot and Treat Huey will play Fabio Fognini and Andreas Seppi whilst Andy's brother Jamie will partner John Peers as they take on Julien Benneteau and Edouard Roger-Vasselin. Finally Ross Hutchins continues his comeback after battling caner last year as he and partner Colin Fleming take on Jean-Julien Rojer and Horia Tecau.

Li Na Breaks Rankings Record

By moving up to second in the world, Li Na has become the highest ever ranked Asian player after rising above Victoria Azarenka. Despite only reaching the third round in Doha, Azarenka's absence meant that Na was guaranteed to move into second before the tournament had even started.Agnieszka Radwanska also rose above Azarenka into third after a strong tournament in Doha, reaching the semi-final. Doha champion Simona Halep rose just one place to ninth whilst beaten finalist Angelique Kerber also rose one to eighth. The other semi-finalist Jelena Jankovic rose to seventh as Sara Errani dropped three places to tenth.
One of the biggest movers this week was Britain's Heather Watson who moved up 39 places to 122nd after claiming the Midland title. Yanina Wickmayer also moved up 14 places to 58th after a strong quarter-final showing in Doha.
In the men's draw, David Ferrer's victory in Buenos Aires combined with Juan Martin Del Potro's poor display in Rotterdam meant that Ferrer moves above Del Potro to fourth in the World. Tomas Berdych ended his 16 month barren run by winning the Rotterdam title, moving him above Andy Murray to sixth as Murray slips to seventh, his lowest position for six years.
Promising youngster Kei Nishikori continued to move towards the top 10, successfully defending his Memphis title and moving up to fifteenth. The largest mover in the top 50 was Marin Cilic who continued his fine run of form by reaching the Rotterdam final, moving him up eight places to 29th.
Big serving Croat Ivo Karlovic was the biggest mover in the top 100 after reaching the final in Memphis, ascending 24 places to 56th. However, it was a poor week for Julien Benneteau as he fell 28 places to 67th in the world.

Watson Wins Midland Title

Britain's Heather Watson claimed her first trophy of the season as she won the Dow Corning Tennis Classic, brushing aside Ksenia Pervak 6-4 6-0.The Guernsey-born youngster continues her fine start to 2014 as she failed to drop a single set in the second-tier event in Midland.
The victory sees her continued her ascent back up the rankings as she attempts to break back into the top 100 to ensure she avoids having to qualify for Grand Slams. This week she rose nearly 40 places from 161st to 122nd.
During the first set it looked as though nerves may get the better of the youngster as she found herself 4-1 down to a dominant Pervak. However Watson regained her composure, winning the next eleven consecutive games to claim both the first and second set in quick succession.
Her strong start to 2014 will come as a welcome relief, after spending much of 2013 off the court following a long battle with glandular fever. The illness saw her plummet down the rankings, narrowly avoiding dropping out of the top 200.
It was a weekend to remember for Watson as she followed up on her singles success with a hard-fought victory in the doubles finals as well. Alongside her partner Anna Tatishvili, she won the title after a nervy Championship tie-break decider in the third set against Sharon Fichman and Maria Sanchez.

Watson Storms Into Semis
Watson has looked in impressive form in Midland having not dropped a set so far. She came into the tournament on a high after a number of impressive victories in the Fed Cup.
Before this match Govortsova had played British opponents on ten separate occasions, never losing a match. However she was outclassed today by Watson, who never looked troubled by her Belarusian opponent.
After a number of early breaks in serve, Watson emerged with a break advantage at 4-2. From there she held serve twice to claim the first set 6-3.
In the second set Govortsova had no reply to the dogged Brit and quickly found herself 5-1 down. Despite saving one game she succumbed to Watson in the next game, losing the second set 6-2.
Watson will be pleased with her progress in Midland and a victory in the tournament could see her rise almost 40 places to 122 in the world rankings.
The Guernsey born star is looking to recover after missing a large portion of last season through glandular fever left her a long way ourside the top 100.
In the semi-final Watson will play the experienced Sofia Arvidsson. The Swede has proved she can tackle young opposition as she eliminated promising American Lauren Davis 6-3 7-6(6) in the quarter-finals.

Murray Breezes Into Second Round
As temperatures lingered around 42 degrees centigrade Murray was in no mood to hang around, dispatching his opponent in just 87 minutes.
After playing only three matches since the US Open there were question marks over how the Scot would emerge when tested, especially after losses to both Florian Mayer and Lleyton Hewitt during tournament preparation.
However, he showed few signs of rustiness after the back surgery which kept him out of the last few months of 2013, moving freely around the court and serving particularly well, firing 12 aces during the match.
Murray took control of the opening games, breaking Soeda in his second service game to take a 2-1 lead. Soeda struggled to penetrate the Scot's defence making a number of unforced errors in the process as Murray went on to take the first set 6-1.
The second set continued in much the same fashion, the game consisting largely of short baselines rallies with neither player overly keen on excessive movement in the heat. Murray broke early once again to dampen his opponents hopes as Soeda failed to earn a break point of his own throughout the match.
Targeting his opponents significantly weaker backhand, Murray finished the set off quickly, breaking him once again to claim the second set 6-1.
The scorching humidity finally began to take its toll as Murray endured a slight loss of tempo at the start of the third set. Coupled with a determined Soeda, the set remains on serve until 3-3 when the Japanese defence finally crumbled, Murray breaking to take a 4-3 advantage.
At that point Soeda looked a beaten man, dropping his shoulders as he waited for the inevitable. Luckily he did not have to wait long as Murray broke him for the final time to claim the last set 6-3.
Murray is the final British representative in the singles at the Australian Open after the first round exits of both Laura Robson and Heather Watson yesterday.
In the second round he will face another qualifier, this time in the shape of Frenchman Vincent Millot who won a marathon five setter against Wayne Odesnik.

Gutsy Watson Falls Just Short
British interest in the women's draw ended as Heather Watson came agonizingly close to causing a first round upset, pushing thirty-first seed Daniela Hantuchova to a third set before losing 7-5 3-6 6-3.Watson joined compatriot Laura Robson in falling at the first hurdle after Robson lost in straight sets earlier in the day.
After battling through three rounds of qualifying, Watson will be pleased to have tested a seeded player after a difficult season last year suffering from glandular fever. However, having fought toe-to-toe with the Slovakian throughout, she will undoubtedly be disappointed not to progress.
Despite a solid start to the match, Watson found herself a break down at 4-2. However, she was quick to break back, tying the first set up at 4-4. Despite leading 5-4 Watson ended the set with a flurry of nerves, getting broken to eventually lose 7-5.
Watson came out fighting in the second set, refusing to give Hantuchova another break despite her best efforts. Her resilience paid off as she broke the Slovakian to take a 4-2 lead. Both players then broke each other to take it to 5-3. An unlucky Hawk-Eye decision seemed to affect Hantuchova's concentration, as Watson served out the set to take it to a decider.
The third set continued with both players engaged in grueling baseline rallies in the Melbourne heat. Hantuchova had three break points early on but blew them all as Watson held serve. The Slovakian didn't make the same mistake twice, breaking Watson in the next game and racing to a 4-1 lead.
A fantastic forehand return down the line helped set up a break back point which Watson duly converted to make it 4-3. However, it was not to last as Hantuchova broke back before serving out the match, Watson drilling a backhand into the net on match point.
Watson refused to be too down-heartened by the defeat, telling BBC Sport, Even though I might be dropping in the rankings, I'm not worried about that. I've had a good start to the year, I've improved as a player, and it's been a positive few weeks".
Hantuchova will go on to face the Czech, Karolina Pliskova, who came through her first round match against Pauline Parmentier 6-0 6-1. Elsewhere, British hopes now lie firmly in the hands of Andy Murray who begins his campaign on Tuesday evening against Go Soeda.

Watson Into Australian Open With Victory
Heather Watson battled through her final qualifying match against American Irina Falconi to secure her place in the Australian Open.Her 6-4 7-6(1) victory ensures her third consecutive Melbourne appearance, where she will face 31st seed Daniela Hantuchova in the opening round.
After slipping to 120 in the world rankings, Watson will be looking to cause an upset in order to defend the ranking points won in last year's event, where she reached the third round.
Victory will come as a relief to the youngster, who suffered from a long bout of glandular fever throughout much of the 2013 season. She told BBC Sport, "It would have been the end of the world if I didn't get through".
Watson successfully defended against her opponents mixed style of play, claiming victory in just over two hours on a cool Melbourne afternoon.
After breaking Falconi in the first set to lead 5-3, Watson had the chance to serve for the set but dropped her serve. However, the Guernsey-born star hit back to claim it 6-4.
After a tense second set, missing two match points at 5-4, Watson was ruthless in the tie-break, winning seven consecutive points to claim the victory.
She said, "It was a very tricky match. She's not your usual WTA player. She slices a lot, she's got good hands, good touch, she's not the overpowering type".
After her first round victory Watson admitted to nerves and those returned today. "I got a bit nervous closing it out but it's last round of qualifying; there's a lot on that match".
She will join fellow Brits Laura Robson and Andy Murray in the main draw, the only one of six British players to come through qualifying.
There will be little rest for Watson who is scheduled to play her opening tie on Monday, appearing first on Court 2.
